Mandarin and Cantonese are dialects of the Chinese language. They are both tonal dialects that share the same base alphabet, but as a spoken language they have major differences. Cantonese has nine tones, whereas Mandarin has just five. The result is two dialects which sound like completely different languages.
Learning Chinese can be challenging for a number of reasons. The writing system is extremely difficult for anyone accustomed to the Latin alphabet. Learners must memorise thousands of special characters. Furthermore, the tonal nature of the language, plus the different dialects, are also difficult to learn. For example, the Mandarin dialect has several different tones, meaning one word can be pronounced in several different ways, while each pronunciation of the word completely changes its meaning.
