Danish, known as Dansk, is spoken principally in Denmark. However, there are around 5.4 million speakers around the world, located across Canada, Germany, Iceland, the United Arab Emirates, USA, Greenland, Sweden, Norway and the Faroe Islands. It is spoken by 50,000 people from the Danish diaspora in Germany in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, some 25,000 in Norway; in Norway, Danish has minority language status. Danish is a mandatory subject in schools in Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Danish can be most easily distinguished from other Scandinavian languages, namely Swedish and Norwegian, due to its particular pronunciation. An example of this would be how the glottal stop is used by Danish speakers. They are considered “sister” languages as there is a significant commonality to the languages, with Norwegian being the “middle sister” due to having the most similarities to Danish and Swedish, than they do to one another. Danish itself has changed the most from other Scandinavian languages (and other Nordic languages), adopting words from French, English and Lower German, making it a more modernised and evolved language than some of the others.
